"KEEP BUSTIN'."

Inspirational artwork for the day

Carsten P. Dietrich, who is a regular poster here, sent me a great Seagal picture he did that I thought needed to be shared. He described it as a scene from “that animated prequel to UNDER SIEGE, where we see Ryback going on various black-ops missions whilst regularly flashing back to his youth on the streets of Japan etc.” It kind of reminds me of those Hungarian comic book adaptations we were talking about a little while ago. And there’s a cameo in the picture relating to an implied back story from the movie.

Click on the clipping to see the whole picture on Carsten’s tumbler.

He also shared with me his cartoon portraits of Mad Max and Snake Plissken, and going through his archives I saw a couple Riddick and a John McClane (specifically from A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD, but that makes it more unique).

This might open the floodgates to write this but maybe that’s not a bad thing: I know alot of you are great artists who have sent me badass cinema related links like this, should I start posting some of them from time to time?

  1. You should always post anything that catches your fancy. I would hate to think there was something (artwork, music, food) that Vern thought was worthwhile that I didn’t get the chance to witness also. Thanks for sharing this great artist.

It pains me to have to admit that I didn’t guess who the figure behind Ryback was until I opened up the full picture. I’ve seen that movie at least five damn times, I should remember little bits of lore like that.

I love the picture – Dietrich absolutely nails the faces, doesn’t he? But I gotta ask – what the heck is up with [REDACTED]’s gun? That thing has like three scopes on it, plus two magazines, a silencer, and what – to to the uneducated eyes of a Britisher who’s never seen anything more powerful than a paintball gun in real life – looks suspiciously like a Swiss army knife hanging off the bottom of it. (Honestly I’m pretty much guessing in the dark as to which way up the thing is supposed to be held, so I guess it could be the top also. But I digress.)

Anyway, if I’m right about the Swiss army knife bit, the next question obviously becomes: does it have a corkscrew on it? Because if so, that could lead to some of the most comically awkward wine-bottle-openings ever.

  3. This is great stuff, Vern. You know I’m all for posters here sharing art or whatever else they produce. For those interested, people can check out some of my art at my facebook page at http://Facebook.com/Davidlambertart or at my instagram at http://instagram.com/Davidlambertart. I’ll post specific examples in a bit.

  5. I love this.

  6. I’ll totally post some art. I’ll never forget you showing me that Japanese Above the Law poster….fuck I still need that.

  7. That artwork’s mine. Thanks for the positive feedback, guys!

    Paul:

I’m guessing I know about as much about modern military ordnance as you do, to be honest.
I looked at a couple of photos to get the look of the rifles right, and all I can say is that what I drew pretty accurately reflects what I saw.
That second “scope” at the front is a flashlight, I believe.

  8. Somebody ought to do a study of “-ix” fictional names. I’ll get started:
    Mannix
    John Matrix
    Strannix

  9. CEPE that’s some nice work. Be proud, man.

  10. More of this type of thing would be welcome (the fact that I do this type of thing too notwithstanding).

  11. Yeah definitely more of this. This pic was dope.

  12. Cepe, I would pay reasonably good money to have that drawing up on my wall. Awesome work.

  13. Darren:

Thanks, man. Since a couple of other people have also asked me about prints of the picture, I guess I’ll look into making some available.

  14. WTF?! Why didn’t I notice that post when it came out? I shit you not, this is the first time I see it!
Anyway, great work, man! I wish I would be that talented.

  15. I like this guy:

    http://kungfubob.blogspot.co.uk/

    Dude’s met Choi Min Sik!

  16. You know what I love most about this? Fuckin Tommy Lee Jones, man. That look on his face. He looks wired. And he’s in the goddamn centre of the picture, apropos. Also the soldier on the far right kinda looks like Jason Clarke with his distinguished chin.

  17. Hey guys, I just posted a new MAD MAX-related illustration on my tumblr
(I really liked that FURY ROAD trailer). If you’re interested, have a look.
