I’ve enjoyed David Cronenberg’s movies for most of my life, and he’s been highly respected for as long as I can remember, especially in horror circles, but also elsewhere. I was still a kid when THE FLY came out, and yet I remember it being a phenomenon, a genuine blockbuster that everyone talked about, with an appreciation for its weird grossness.
These days he’s a bigger icon than ever, but I feel his work is being unintentionally diminished by the way he’s been short-handed as the “body horror” guy. I don’t think he’d still be going if that was all there was to him. In the most recent issue of Fangoria, Phil Nobile Jr. did a great interview where he asked about that. Cronenberg said he was proud to have Coralie Fargeat and Julia Ducournau as his “cinema daughters,” but “I still don’t know what ‘body horror’ means.” (read the rest of this shit…)

I rented SPECIAL FORCES, which is American for FORCES SPECIALES, thinking it was an American DTV movie. It stars Djimon Hounsou (NEVER BACK DOWN). I thought after ELEPHANT WHITE he was just doing shit like this. It turns out to be a French movie from 2011, and therefore the second movie about French special forces that I’ve seen recently.
Well you gotta find something to be proud of your country for, and right now reality sure as shit ain’t doin’ the trick. As I’m writing this we’re lookin down the barrel of four more years of Bush. There are signs of vote fraud starting to peek their heads out, but since it wouldn’t necessarily change who the president is, everybody seems to figure eh, screw it. They just massacred the shit out of innocent people in Fallujah, only to move the rebels into Mosul and Baghdad, so now there will be more massacres. Meanwhile, Bush continues to stick an electrode up the ass of the concept of accountability, promoting everybody he can think of who has fucked up bad. National security adviser has destroyed our national security? Make her secretary of state! White House lawyer wrote the infamous memo arguing that torture is great and the Geneva Conventions are for pussies? Make him attorney general! As we speak they are trying to track down Joseph Hazelwood to head up the EPA and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
