I use hands to help my fellow man / I use hands to help with what I can / But when I face an unjust injury / Then I change my hand into FIST OF FURY
A must watch for any horror or sci-fi fan. Hardware is an ambitious, artsy, exploitative, perverse, poetic, British low budget scifi/horror/action movie from 1990. It was originally supposed to be a 1-million-pound low-rent Terminator clone, but writer/director Richard Stanley gave it all he got, and made one of the defining cult classics of the 90’s. Dystopian future, killer robots, hard-hitting gore, explicit nudity, Iggy Pop, Lemmy, and the greatest soundtrack to any film ever. Don’t let the middling IMDB grade fool you, this is a love-it-or-hate-it affair. Most people hate it, but those who love it, REALLY love it.
While it could be argued that the singing Elvis in all those ridiculous movies was a badass, and therefore Val Kilmer’s inspired performance here is worthy, I’m not gonna do that. Instead I will appeal to Vern’s love of the occasional war film, jokes at film conventions, and perhaps latent desire to see a singing WWII picture with a Blue Lagoon sub-plot. Really? No latency? C’maaaaannnn!!!
Paul Verhoeven’s Christian horror movie. Ranked #93 in Empire magazines ”The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema” in 2010. Popular opinion is that Turkish Delight and Soldier of Orange are his best Dutch movies, but this really stylish horror gets my vote.
What can I say, like Scary Movie I appreciate how the Wayans take two movies and intertwine them to launch the parody. There’s mugging, and a mugging, plenty of great jokes and ridiculous escalation. This one really takes on the “hood movies” in an over-the-top way. Omar Epps cameo? Yeah, baby!
I gave a spoiler-free review of this one, and I’d love to see Vern tackle it. It’s a great film and deserves to get some plaudits and maybe some publicity for the crowd who occasionally see foreign language films but aren’t too sure which ones to look for.
Other points of interest: it has a seriously scary antagonist, the best I’ve seen in a while. Apparently one of the cast was in ”Game of Thrones”, if that piques your interest. Oh, and it’s fucking awesome.
