What have you guys discovered this year?

I read an article that said "Is 2013 the best year yet for hip hop?" or something like that.  It was pretty poorly argued and I couldn't take it too seriously.  I imagine a more accurate title might have been "Is 2013 the year when a lot more people started being aware of underground rap?"  (I appreciate that Chance the Rapper is doing unexpected stuff both musically and lyrically and the cover art sure is awesome, but it's not something I see myself actively listening to.  But I get that some people might look at it and some other stuff and say "we are in a hip hop renaissance").

At any rate I've gone to my sources and compiled this huge list of all the music that people are claiming is their favorite albums of the year and now I'm trying to check it all out.  So far this is my favorite album:

It's good old fashioned instrumental rock and roll; they jam the fuck out.  Check out the first song here if you're so inclined: http://www.stereogum.com/14573.....iere/mp3s/

I guess I'll let you guys know what I find that's worth hearing, I dunno this forum is kinda slow.

I'm willfully ignorant of things like pop and rap nowadays. The only stuff I listen to not on my iPod is either the classic rock or oldies stations on the radio or certain Internet Radio stations. That said, I have been discovering new music. I have a pretty deep love of progressive rock, a genre that's been going through a phase of transformation from something slightly different from what the originators of the genre (King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, even Pink Floyd to some degree). My major discovery was a band called Big Big Train, specifically their most recent records English Electric parts one and two.

I also really like Gov't Mule's latest album, with Warren Haynes singing everything as usual on one disc but a host of guest vocalists on the 2nd disc. Bowie's latest is pretty tight as well. And what's so far my favorite record, Steven Wilson's The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories). He has been more or less reponsible for a lot of recent new music I have come to love, not just what he plays and sings on.

There has been a few decent prog records this year.  Also check out Marnie Stern's "The Chronicles of Marnia" and Andy Winter's "Incomprehensible".  Maybe Blood Ceremony - "The Eldritch Dark", although it's midway between like a Jethro Tull prog and Black Sabbath.

My favourite album of the year so far is HAND IN HAND from Riva Starr, an italian DJ and producer. This album is way more song oriented than his usual stuff and what I love about it is its juxtaposition of (mostly) uplifting melodies and pretty dark and depressing lyrics.

I also enjoyed the new Electric Six album MUSTANG, although I have to admit that I find some of their lyrics this time surprisingly questionable. (Mostly the final song CHERYL VS DARYL, which is about a couple who gets hired to play a rape scene in a movie and of course their relationship doesn't survive that moment. Kinda like a reversed dark drama version of ZACK & MIRI MAKE A PORNO.)

The latest Franz Ferdinand album is nothing special, but a whole lot better than its boring predecessor and of course Daft Punk's album was seriously cool too.

And then he pooped on the podium.
