Until now, having heard of this but never having seen any of it, I always assumed that they tried to pass Bud Cort off AS Norman. You have to at least give them credit for not pulling that move. (Hey, one weird guy's like another...)

I just looked up Norman Baines/Knightrider on Youtube and found a clip. Looks like this guy made a sort of career (or at least a few extra bucks) imitating Perkins. Now I'm gonna go get my memory wiped.

Griff - the one I borrowed was from that websight, that's why I mentioned it but then when I was looking for cover art I found that other one and stayed up til 4 in the morning looking at old Film Comment articles about Texas Chain Saw 2 and downloading the extended dance version of the Phantasm theme and what not. Also the guy seems to be really into Dolly Parton, I noticed.

"It’s actually kind of cool and humanistic that this fella is trying to honor the memory of a guy who, let’s face it, made some pretty large mistakes in my opinion. Not to be judgmental, I’m just saying he stabbed some people to death, left some bodies in ice machines, etc. But Alex isn’t dwelling on that, he’s remembering Norman’s good points. For example he knew alot about birds, he kept the sheets clean, etc."

I had a good one minute long chuckle at this part.

I remember watching this when I was a kid and thinking it wasn't too bad. Not inordinately. But I trust your opinion, Vern, more than I trust young Danny Strange's. It's probably not that great.

On the other hand, I will defend Gus Van Sant's "Psycho." What I think a lot of people don't appreciate is that it was done in the spirit of experimentation - "I wonder what the hell would happen if you remake a movie shot-for-shot? Let's do it, and that way we'll find out." I can understand if you didn't like the end result (Vince Vaughn is a terrible Norman Bates), but to call it ill-conceived is sort of missing the point, I think. No one had ever done anything like that before, so part of the fun was making the movie to find out what would happen. Sometimes you gotta roll the dice, you know?

(Also, I haven't seen Psycho IV: The Beginning, but I can say I like Gus Van Sant's remake more than I like Psycho II or III. So, different strokes.)

Bad as "Bates Motel" may be (and I won't deny it's terrible), I certainly wouldn't classify at as the worst "Psycho" related film. That dishonor goes to Gus Van Sant's horrendously ill-conceived remake.
