This one is my favorite Substitute sequel. I actually had a chance at a convention to talk to Roy Frumkes about the franchise. He said he had a lot of fun writing the first one with Simonelli and Ormsby and that they
readily signed on for two more movies. They got screwed over somehow (Frumkes was too much of a gentleman to specify) and refused to return for Part 4. He said he pretty much hated 2 (the producers meddled with it)
but really liked 3. Frumkes also said he sort regretted not doing the fourth one and was curious how it turned out. I told him they did a good job and he seemed genuinely like he was going to go and rent it. Classy guy.

Kenner - Of the sequels, yeah I agree with you. Its decent action exploitation, and how many movies have the hero walk in on his love interest fucking the villain?

Awkward!

Dan P - I think Uma would be among those actors that trained for months and months to be believable. And it worked.

Goodbadgroovy,

What do you think about Uma Thurman in the KILL BILLs? She's not a martial artist yet those films strike me as very sufficient in the fight scene department. Do you think it would have been better with a martial artist in the lead role, given what that could have sacrificed in the dramatic scenes?

My favorite Substitute movie was Failure Is Not An Option...Treat Williams really, really took it to the next level fighting white supremacists. Plus there was some great action.

Depends on the action they're involved in really. If we're talking a full on martial arts film then in general I'd rather it was a martial artist first, actor second (the rare person who manages both, eg. MJW is a god among people) simply because I enjoy well choreographed fight scenes and most actors don't cut it on that front.

I'd say it's only been recent films that filmmakers have managed to convince me the likes of Keanu Reeves and Matt Damon can fight due to them actually making them train for months and careful editing.

Your gun shootin' and the odd punch up action films are indeed much better with an actor at the helm.

Its a generalization, but I probably prefer a really good actor doing an action role, than an athlete/martial artist/model in the same part. Berenger and Williams are good actors.

take SPARTAN and TAKEN, both leaded by (or can be) damn good actors. No less ass-kicking.
